Mobile has quickly become the next generation platform for games and software. Graphics continue to get better and with dual-core, even quad-core processors starting to become standard, there is enough power to fuel high quality games.
When it comes to mobile GPUs, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 or Mali’s T series remain supreme, but Imagination Technologies has a few tricks up their sleeves and have been said to create the fastest GPU which is 60 times faster than its predecessors.
That’s quite a bold claim, but the PowerVR G6630 looks to bring amazing performance while keeping it all under control in terms of power usage. The G6630 has six processing cores and to preserve power, will shut off so many cores when dealing with non-intensive tasks. It supports the latest standards such as OpenGL ES 3.0/2.0/1.1, OpenGL 3.x/4.x, OpenCL 1.x, and DirectX 10.
Obviously, this is just a chip and manufacturers will have to get on board to implement into their devices. When is the big question. Imagination Technologies say that it could be out in devices next year. They could just be saying that to say it though as it can take up to two years in many cases for newly announced hardware to make its way to actual devices.
While today’s latest and greatest mobile GPUs aren’t bad, people always want something better and faster. If the PowerVR G6630 can live up to the hype, it has the chance to power a new generation of games, games that take us one step closer to console level quality. In that instance, with a bluetooth controller and micro HDMI cable, your gaming console has gotten a heck of a lot smaller.
