Name: AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) Build 5
Description: AOKP is a great ROM as it mixes in some cherry picks from CM10 and AOSP along with some of their own special features. Most people know my favorite feature of AOKP is the ability to change the color of the softkeys easily. I like to have softkeys on my Galaxy Nexus be the holo-blue color we see in the status bar. Sometimes I’ll change it to purple or red too. You can also add apps to your navigation bar, which I have not seen in any other ROM so far.

Opinion: AOKP is one of my all-time favorite AOSP based ROMs. I’ve had it on my Galaxy Nexus, and Nexus 7 since the Ice Cream Sandwich days. I feel that the toggles in the notification bar are better looking than those in CyanogenMod 10 and other ROMs. And yes I am a UI (User Interface) guy.
Battery life: I’ve had some pretty good battery life on AOKP, but I won’t be showing you screenshots since my Galaxy Nexus is on the verge of dying (RIP), and the battery life has been horrible on every ROM for me. But you will get a normal days use out of AOKP on your device, you can get even more juice if you’re willing to install a custom Kernel like Lean kernel, Samurai or Franco Kernel. My vote is for Lean or Samurai.
Ratings :
- Speed (4/5) – Overall the ROM is pretty speedy and smooth.
- Features (4/5) – So many features in AOKP you won’t know what your missing.
- Theme (3/5) – Well it’s AOSP themed, so it’s the best Android theme around. Android 4.x theming is so simple and clean.
- Development (4/5) – New builds of AOKP are usually available over the weekend. So you’ll be updating about every week. So it’s not quite nightlies and not quite stable builds.
- Overall (4/5) -The entire ROM is a joy to have installed. I’ve tried out many other ROMs but always come back to AOKP because it’s just simply the best for me.
Pro:
- Ability to change the color of your softkeys, and add new softkeys
- Smooth, and fast
Cons:
- Not as much customization as I’d like to see
- Not as many updates as many of us are used to with CyanogenMod and others
Conclusion: By now you probably know that AOKP is one of my all-time favorite ROMs. At the time of reviewing this, it was on Build 5, it has now moved onto Milestone 1 and won’t be receiving any more updates until Android 4.2 source drops. But even with the limited customization, it’s still hard not to love this ROM, it’s fast, smooth (like butter), with great battery life. What else could you ask for?
