Today, Archos has unveiled a new tablet. It’s named the Archos 97 Titanium HD. It sports some pretty good specs, they are pretty comparable to Apple’s iPad 4. Including the same “Retina” display as the iPad 4. Here’s the complete spec sheet:
- 9.7-inch IPS display at 2048×1536 resolution
- 1.6GHz dual-core A9 processor, quad-core GPI (Mali 400 MP4)
- 1GB of RAM
- 8GB internal storage
- micro SD card support up to 64GB
- 5MP rear facing camera, 2MP on the front
- Android 4.1 – Jelly Bean
Archos hasn’t announced any pricing for the Archos 97 Titanium HD yet, but it should be cheaper than the iPad 4 which is currently selling at $499 for the entry model. Usually Archos will release their devices in Europe first then the rest of the world. So we may see it heading Asia, and even North America in a few months to compete with Apple’s 2-month-old iPad 4.
Lately Archos has announced a few different Android tablets. Including the 13.3-inch Arnova Family Pad, the 8-inch 80 Cobalt, and the 7-inch game pad. But this 97 Titanium HD is the first one to come with this high of a display resolution. So it should do well in the market.
Even if the Archos 97 Titanium HD had worse specs than the iPad 4, I think it would be a better buy. But looking at these specs, they almost mirror the iPad 4, except the storage, micro SD card support and the fact it’s running Android 4.1. There may be a few other differences in the specs between the two as well. But I gotta say, Android 4.1 is still about 3 years ahead of Apple’s iOS, and those maps they have with it.
So who would buy the Archos 97 Titanium HD if the price were right? How much would you pay for this? If Archos really wants to sell a ton of these, they would need to be sold around $200-300.
