Yes, you read that right, this 7-incher from Vizio is powered by the Tegra 3 processor from NVIDIA. Even though Vizio has a 10-inch tablet with the Tegra 4. Nonetheless, it’s still a 7-inch tablet that brings you a pure Android experience. No customizations at all from Vizio. But this device still doesn’t have a proper name. Vizio spoke with The Verge regarding this new tablet and they confirmed the following specs:
- 7-inch HD Display
- quad-core Tegra 3 processor
- 16GB internal storage
- 1.2MP front-facing camera
- Android 4.1 (final build may have Android 4.2)
It’s a great looking tablet, and it’s also running the tablet interface instead of the phablet interface we see on the Nexus 7, which has the same size screen. This 7-inch tablet from Vizio was designed to be used in portrait mode, but that doesn’t mean you can’t flip it around for landscape. This tablet was made to compete with those e-readers like the Nook and the Kindle Fire, even the Nexus 7. But the big question is going to be how does it compare on the price? So far there’s no price given for this 7-inch tablet. But if they really expect to compete with the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, they’ll need to price around $200 or lower.
Vizio isn’t too popular in the Android world, but they do make some great PCs and even better TVs. This 7-incher from Vizio is due to come out in the first half of 2013, so hopefully we see it in the next few months, before the Nexus 7 gets a refresh. And Like I said above, it really needs a low price to be able to compete. Comparing this to the Nexus 7, Vizio really has no upper hand on ASUS/Google’s Nexus 7. Spec’s look to be relatively the same, except the Nexus 7 is a Nexus and is already running Android 4.2.
So who’s interested in this 7-inch tablet from Vizio? It looks like a light-weight, great looking device. Hopefully it’s not one of those devices we see at CES and doesn’t come out for another 6 months. By then all of us will forget about it. A prime example is the Droid Bionic a couple years ago.
