It’s been a little over a year since Adobe launched their Photoshop Touch app for Android tablets. Now this week they have finally made available for purchase a version of the popular photo editing software optimized for the smaller smartphone screens.
According to Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe “Mobile phones are increasingly becoming the primary tool for people to take and edit photos. Adobe is dedicated to serving our customers’ evolving creative workflow and we heard, loud and clear, that Photoshop fans wanted some core Adobe imaging magic on their smartphones.”
The major story here isn’t just that the app was released however, it’s the price. The smartphone version of Photoshop Touch will run you $5 while the same tablet app costs $10. Additionally you need to re purchase the app if you want to run it on your phone even if you have already bought the tablet app.
This is essentially the exact same app as the tablet version offering features such as:
- Layers
- Advanced selections tools
- Adjustments
- Filters
- Scribble Selection for high-precision selections using only your finger
- Camera Fill for real-time creative blending of your camera feed with layers
- Filters including Color Drops, Acrylic Paint, and Ripple
- A sharing function to post photos on Facebook, Twitter, email etc.
For your five dollars you also get 2GB of storage (with the possibility to buy more) in Adobe’s Creative Cloud that will allow users to sync their work across all of their devices. From the Adobe Blog:
“With Photoshop Touch and the Adobe Creative Cloud, I can start a project on my phone, continue it on my tablet, and polish it off at my desk in Photoshop CS6. Photoshop Touch will automatically keep my projects in sync on each device, at the full resolution and with all the layers intact. This capability is available to every customer with a free Creative Cloud account. There is no paid subscription requirement for syncing.”
Photoshop Touch is a top notch app and runs really well on a tablet just as I’m sure it runs equally as great on a handset. The question of course is whether this app is worth purchasing again if you already have the tablet version. Granted it’s great to be able to sync your work across devices, but it would have been nice if Adobe had thrown us a bone by giving the people who already dropped a sawbuck on their app a freebie here. For people new to the platform that $5 price tag is a steal though.
