The Galaxy S4 is less than a week away from being announced at Samung’s Unpacked event in New York City on March 14th at 7pm EST. But that’s not stopping all the rumors from flying around. The newest rumor tells us we’ll see a highly efficient green PHOLED display and floating touch technology. This would be similar to what Sony put in their Xperia Sola. Of course, this rumor is coming from Sam Mobile, so you’ll definitely want to take this with a grain of salt…perhaps an entire bucket of salt if you look at their track record. They’ve brought some big and juicy rumors about the Galaxy S4. So let’s get to them
So you know those rumors we heard that there would be a Snapdragon 600 and Exynos 5 Octa versions of the Galaxy S4? Well it looks like this leak has partially confirmed that. Sam Mobile’s source is telling them that Samsung has two different Galaxy S4 prototypes. One of those is fitted with an LCD display and a Qualcomm chip, while the other has the Exynos and AMOLED display combination that is now standard in Galaxy S devices. Right now, we have no idea if Samsung will abandon one of those prototypes or not. But at this point the prototype should be finalized since it’s being shown off next week, or at least it should be shown off then. We hope Samsung doesn’t do what Sony did at their PlayStation 4 event last month.
Green PHOLED Display
Before we get started Android Authority has given us some background on the Green PHOLED display. There are two types of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) in the AMOLED display that Samsung uses on just about every device they make, there’s fluorescent and phosphorescent. Now the differences between them is that fluorescent materials generally last much longer but are harder to produce and less energy efficient. Samsung has used a combination of the two types in their AMOLED displays.
But for the Galaxy S4, Samsung is said to be using phosphorescent materials for the red and green OLEDs and fluorescent materials for the blue ones. Now this should ensure that the display is about 30% more efficient than a similar LCD panel. the PHOLED’s shouldn’t have a huge impact on the quality of the display, but we’ll have to wait and see on that.
Floating Touch

According to the leaks from Sam Mobile, users are going to be able to control the Galaxy S4 without actually touching it. Now this type of technology is nothing new, Sony actually implemented it a while ago on their Xperia Sola. Basically Floating Touch allows you to interact with a touchscreen by hovering your fingers a few centimeters above the device. The screen has sensors that detect the electrical field that flows around your fingers, which will accurately determine their position. Samsung offers something similar to this on the Note 2 with Air View, which uses the S Pen.
As usual, Sam Mobile’s report isn’t very clear, so as we said earlier, take this information with a grain of salt. But we’ll know definitely next Thursday. Make sure you keep your browser locked to Android Headlines for all the information about the Galaxy S4 on launch day.
