It’s been a long time coming, a real long time. Finally, Motorola fans can get in on the custom ROM action thanks to Dan Rosenberg, also known as @djrbliss. He has successfully unlocked the bootloaders for several Motorola devices, including the RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD, Atrix HD and RAZR M.
This is real folks, unlike what happened a few years ago when a single guy generated false reports about unlocking the Droid X bootloader. Trolls need to die in a wildfire, and yes I genuinely believe that.
Rosenberg has apparently asked the folks over at DroidRzr.com to try out his unlock process in order to show off whether or not it actually works. It appears his methods are true because the bootloaders on at least two devices were unlocked. In fact, both of the images included here prominently display those unlocked devices.
Unfortunately, the unlock method has not been publically released yet, and there’s no official word on when it will be coming. Several sources state that it will be coming soon.
Still, after many years of failed attempts from different developers it’s exciting to see a working unlock process finally release for the bootloaders on Motorola’s devices. Maybe we’ll start seeing a lot more development on Motorola devices in the custom kernel community- not that there hasn’t been already.
I know many of you, like me, are clamoring for a Cyanogen port on a lot of these devices. Aside from Cyanogen, there are hundreds of other remarkable custom ROMs that would do wonders for the infamous Motorola Droid line.
There is some rather unfortunate news to go along with all of this though because this unlock method does not work with OMAP phones. That means owners of the Droid Bionic and original RAZR are left in the dust, yet again. Please forgive me while I go volley a long string of expletives at Verizon, Motorola and whoever else I can muster in there. Come to think of it, why don’t those of you who are affected by this sad news join me by voicing your colorful opinions in the comments below.
Damn you Motorola, and Verizon. Still, great work Rosenberg!
