Big screens are starting to trickle down into the lower-end markets, and Samsung seems to be one of the companies that’s pushing them the hardest in these markets. The Galaxy Win is now official, and it has the following specs:
- quad core 1.4 Ghz Cortex A5 Snapdragon 200 CPU
- Adreno 203 GPU
- 4.7″ AMOLED display
- 800×480 resolution
- 1 GB of RAM
- 5 MP back camera
- VGA front-camera
- 8GB internal storage
- microSD
- colors: Ceramic White and Titan Gray
- single SIM or dual SIM
The device seems to have somewhat low-end specs, although the big AMOLED screen will probably make it more expensive than it should be. But Samsung seems to believe that the extra richness of the display is well worth the price, and will convince customers to buy it when they see it in stores.
Unfortunately, Samsung tends to use lower resolutions than most, and a 800×480 resolution seems incredibly low for a 4.7″ device, especially if it uses the Pentile Matrix, which takes away 33% of the subpixels. This could make the device seem like it doesn’t have a very good display due to its low sharpness, despite having beautiful colors.
As you can see this Galaxy device, too, resembles the upcoming Galaxy S4 a lot (and therefore Galaxy S3). This has been part of Samsung strategy for the past year or two – to make every one of their devices use the Galaxy brand, and look the same as the flagship device.
This is a sword that cuts both ways, though. It means that the lower-end devices benefit from the popularity of the high-end one, but in the same times, if the show 10 supposedly different devices that all look the same, but have different prices, the customers might increasingly go for the lower priced version, if they don’t feel like they need all the bells and whistles of the high-end one.
This poses a long term problem for the profitability of the Galaxy brand if customers start identifying it to a mid-range device. The fact that even the high-end one seems to be made from the same type of plastic body that even the low-end Galaxy devices are using, doesn’t help either. Pricing for the Galaxy Win is not available yet, but expect a somewhat mid-range price, rather than a low-end one.
