Here’s something else that wasn’t in the keynote today. Google Wallet now allows you to send money to your friends via Gmail. Making it pretty easy to pay your friends back. Just send an email. Which is really ideal for those that share rent with your roommate, etc., could this be a PayPal killing feature?
Google Wallet is being integrated into Gmail right now, making it easy for you to quickly and securely send money to your friends and family from the familiar service of Gmail. Even if they don’t have a Gmail address you can still send the money. It’s free to send money if your bank account is linked to Google Wallet or using your Google Wallet balance. Low fees apply to send money using your linked credit or debit card.
Here’s how you send money. Just hover over the attachment paperclip and click on the $ icon to attach money to your message. Enter the amount you want to send and press send. It’s just that simple.
Currently this is only available on the desktop version of Gmail. But you can send money from Google Wallet at the Google Wallet website from your phone or laptop. Of course, you’ll need to have set up Google Wallet to send and receive money and Google Wallet Purchase Protection covers you 100% against eligible unauthorized payments.
Google is rolling this feature out in the coming months to all US Gmail users over 18 years old. So you’ll want to keep an eye out for the $ icon in your Gmail.
