Huawei is starting to look like one of the top companies in the smartphone market, and now they are sending press invites to all the tech sites, to participate at one of their events in London, on June 18th, where they plan to unveil the world’s thinnest phone – the Huawei ‘Beauty’.
We already have a pretty good idea which phone this will be, as we’ve seen leaks of a certain Huawei P6-U06, which at least from the pictures we’ve gotten so far, does look pretty good. It’s supposed to be only 6.18mm thick and have a “brushed metal” chassis, although it’s not entirely clear if that’s really metal or just some sort of solid plastic that is made to look like brushed metal.
If the phone is indeed that thin, then it will make more sense to have it made of metal. Besides the fact that metal is just a more premium feeling material, at such small thickness, the device may just feel too light if it was made of plastic. Metal may add some much needed weight to it.
On the other hand, it wasn’t too long ago that Huawei was the maker of cheap low-end devices, which were made of plastic. It would be pretty surprising if they made one of metal even before Samsung. Samsung, as we all know, has been using plastic extensively across their whole range of devices, from the very low-end to the very high-end. The reason they gave is because it’s a cheaper material to use, but when we’re talking about a $600 flagship, that argument doesn’t hold much water.
Huawei has been trying to beat Samsung in the quality of their devices, and making a phone of metal could be a great way to prove themselves to the world. They would be the third major manufacturer besides Apple and HTC who are doing it, and it could give them a lot of attention from the media and from potential customers.
The phone is rumored to come with a big.Little chip (Huawei’s own chip), 2 GB of RAM, and Android 4.1.2 with Huawei’s own custom skin on top. But we should learn everything about it on June 18th.
