Dennis Woodside, the CEO of Motorola was just up on stage at D11 getting grilled by AllThingsD’s Walt Mossberg. Where he spoke about a lot of different aspects of Motorola. One being that hero device we’ve heard rumored so much, the Moto X phone. He basically confirmed it’s existence this afternoon. He also said that Motorola will be relaunching all their lineups between now and October.
The Motorola X Phone is going to be “broadly distributed”, it’s also being made right here in the US. Motorola is using an old Nokia factory in Fort Worth, TX to make the Moto X phone. He also mentioned that the OLED displays will be made in Korea. Which means it’ll be either LG or Samsung making them. The processors will be made in Taiwan, so let’s hope we see a Snapdragon 800 in the Moto X.
Motorola will be employing about 2,000 workers in this 500,000 square foot factory to make the Moto X phone, and hopefully they’ll be making plenty of other devices there in the near future. It also sounds like, Motorola is looking to produce and sell phones around the Nexus 4 price range. As Woodside said feature phones cost about $30 and smartphones are about $650. Meaning there’s a huge gap there that they want to fill. So if they could sell the Moto X in that gap, they’ll be making buckets of cash on this device. Especially if it does live up to all the hype.
As far as specs go, we’ve heard a little bit of everything. From a Snapdragon S4, Snapdragon S4 Pro, to the Snapdragon 800. So it looks very likely we’ll see a Qualcomm chip in here. The rest of the specs are very suspect at this point, but we’ll keep a look out for them.
As we mentioned, the Moto X is supposedly launching on all the major US carriers. Woodside didn’t name them off, so we are assuming we’ll see it on Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T. Possibly even some regionals like US Cellular. So this is big news because we know there is a Motorola X phone, and it’ll be launching sometime between now and October. Personally, I can’t wait!
