Last year, we saw the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Camera and it seems that while the fusion of Android and high-end camera gear worked well, the pricing and performance of said high-end camera gear held it back. We’ve already heard rumors that Samsung is working on a second-generation Galaxy Camera, and knowing Samsung that sounds more than likely. Now though, a new rumor has surfaced thanks to the folks over at SamMobile detailing a smartphone that will also come with a 16MP camera sensor and presumably some sort of light zoom lens.
The device is to be called the Galaxy S 4 ZOOM and feature a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED Display, pack 8GB of storage with microSD support and feature the latest TouchWiz that debuted with the Galaxy S 4. The processor and RAM are not detailed at this point but, if Samsung plan to throw a 16MP camera sensor in here, we’d assume they were bringing some horsepower to match as well.
The device’s model number is apparently SM-C1010 (which is of course subject to change) and SamMobile have reason to believe that the device will be launched before the Summer, sometime in June or July. Of course, the device is to ship in either a choice of White or Black.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Samsung have tried to market a smartphone with serious camera capabilities. Does anyone remember the Pixon line from a few years back? The Pixon (featured above) was a feature phone from way back when, and it featured a very respectable 8MP shooter, which Samsung marketed as something nearing a digital point and shoot They were almost right but, the performance of the phone made taking photos so difficult that I doubt many people used the phone. My girlfriend had one some years ago and I remember how slow it really was.
Now though, HTC are pushing the whole camera performance thing and while their UltraPixels are certainly sharp, Samsung could one-up them with a full-size camera sensor on a smartphone. What do you think, should Samsung just make another Galaxy Camera and leave the smartphones alone?
