Sony have been up to something recently, they’ve been steadily releasing devices that make up their line-up for the second-half of the year, such as the Xperia ZR and others. Now though, it looks like Sony are ready to show off something a little more “special”, as they teased in a press invite the Japanese company is holding an event July 4th that could well be the announcement of the Xperia Z Ultra, or the Xperia ZU. Sony have been doing this for some time – releasing two “flagship” devices in any one given year last year saw the Xperia S announced at CES 2012, and the Xperia T launch in the Summer. Acute readers will remember that the Xperia Z was arguably the most interesting device to get announced at CES 2013, and now that Summer is here, it stands to reason that Sony are back with something new.
The Xperia Ultra has long been teased as the “Togari” and it’s said to be packing a 6.44-inch display and feature the latest CPU in the form of a Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2 Ghz. Also featured is an 8MP camera and 16GB of expandable storage on top of Android 4.2.2. Lowering the pixel count from the Xperia Z seems like a bizarre idea but, as we discovered in our Xperia Z review, megapixels alone don’t make a good camera.
French website, Nowhereelse is responsible for the leaked image and while there doesn’t seem to be too much revealed by the image, it does look like a sizable device, which would give credence to the rumor of a 6.44-inch device. As well as this, the device features an almost uncanny resemblance to the Xperia Z. It seems that the game of being first out of the gate each year isn’t one that’s working out for Sony – the Xperia Z was quickly overshadowed by the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 but, will releasing another high-end smartphone help them?
