Today, Sony is making quite a bit of noise with their impressive new SmartWatch and their new Xperia Z Ultra smartphone. That doesn’t mean the Xperia Z is suddenly old hat, far from it. In fact, the Japanese company is giving the Xperia Z a makeover to Android 4.2.2 as we speak. The Z launched with Android 4.1 and is one of the few smartphones that’s been update to Android 4.2. In fact, the Xperia Z joins the very exclusive club of having Android 4.2, which seems to be limited to very few handsets and tablets. It’s worth mentioning that the Xperia Z is available all over Europe, and while the update might be rolling out in one region, that doesn’t mean it’s rolling out for you. Yet.
As for the update itself, you’ll get all of the improvements that were brought in with last year’s Android 4.2.2 and some extra little gifts from Sony as well. Most notably is an update that will allow the device to use 64GB microSD cards, which is nice if you just have to take that much data around with you. On top of this, there’s some added widgets and apparently a smoother UI experience. While reviewing the Xperia Z we didn’t find the inclusion of just Android 4.1 to be an issue and we found it perfectly snappy enough, so any type of update that can make things a little quicker would be nice, even if it’s not needed.
If you’re out there with an Xperia Z right now, you can check to see if the update is available to download by going through the usual settings trick. Head on over to settings, then to about phone, and then hit the software update listing. If the update is not available for you to download and you’re on a carrier, it might be that your network is looking to test it before they roll it out.
