It seems that Verizon is looking to cash in on this whole “augmented reality” and “social gaming” fad that’s been around for a while now, and of course, their answer to this new genre is giant robots. Really though, what else were Verizon going to do with the DROID branding, but use Giant Robots? Of course, there’s a little more to it than that but, if you’ve ever played Mech Warrior, then you know what to expect pretty much right off of the bat. Essentially Verizon have brought all of these things together to come up with their own game.
Big Red have a game here that brings together Augmented Reality, location-based, and multiplayer gameplay mechanics and for the most part, it seems to be working. The game is getting some decent ratings in the Play Store and while the graphics don’t look anything amazing, that should make for a game that’s compatible with pretty much any of Verizon’s current Android devices. Also, giant robots firing stuff at each other is hella cool.
There is the option to customize your mech, both through in-app purchases (we know, we know) and through finding hidden weapons and such throughout the country.
Verizon are really looking for folks to feel like a boss with their own unique warrior or, as Verizon want to encourage bad spelling, “wARrior”. There’s a big emphasis on battling others, which is nice for something like this and as time goes on, you should end up with a kick-ass mech of your own to be proud of.
You might get some funny looks from your co-workers in the office as you roam the car park but, let’s be really honest – you do that anyway with Ingress, right? Speaking of which, this doesn’t require you to go through any hoops to get an invite and you can play right away. Take a look at the trailer for the game below:
