The DROID brand from Verizon and Motorola/HTC/Samsung is really what put Android on the map. Before the Motorola Droid way back in 2009, no one really knew what Android was or that it even existed. Motorola began the DROID line with Verizon back with the OG Droid, then there was the Droid Incredible, Droid X, and many more after that. It’s now been about 7 months since a new DROID branded device has been released. In fact the HTC One that is now confirmed for Verizon, won’t be a Droid either…
We’ve already seen Sprint’s EVO line go away (or at least it appears as if it has), T-Mobile’s myTouch line as well. So is the DROID line next? I personally hope so. Then maybe people won’t be calling the Galaxy S4 a DROID. Since DROID is a line of phones not short for Android. Let’s take a look at some of the Droids over the years.
- Motorola Droid
- HTC Droid Eris
- HTC Droid Incredible
- Motorola Droid 2
- Motorola Droid 2 Global
- HTC Droid Incredible 2
- HTC Droid Incredible S
- Motorola Droid X
- Motorola Droid 3
- Samsung Droid Charge
- Motorola Droid Bionic
- Motorola Droid Pro
- Motorola Droid 4
- Motorola Droid XYBOARD 8.2 and 10.1
- Motorola Droid Razr
- Motorola Droid Razr Maxx
- Motorola Droid Razr M
- Motorola Droid Razr HD
- Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD
- HTC Droid DNA
That’s a lot of Droids over the course of 3 years right? Mostly Motorola devices as well. It seems kind of odd to not see a DROID branded device in 7 months. Well the folks over at Android Central spoke with Verizon’s spokeswoman Brenda Raney “the Droid brand is very important to us and will continue to represent the best of the best that is exclusive to the Verizon Wireless network.”
So that’s that. It doesn’t look like the DROID brand is done yet. But it is certainly slowing down. We also heard that Motorola has a few DROID devices for Verizon later this year. So we’ll have to wait and see what Motorola has for Verizon.
