This year, T-Mobile has really been thinking outside of the box. First of all, getting rid of contracts, offering unlimited everything for $70/month, and now this new Jump program? John Legere and company is definitely getting our attention. As a current T-Mobile customer, I’ve been very excited this year to see what magenta is working on. According to The Verge and their sources, Jump is an unlimited device upgrade plan that would allow current customers to upgrade their phone at “new customer pricing” whenever they want and as much as they want. Now given how quickly phones become obsolete nowadays, this is a pretty big deal and something none of the other carriers are doing.
Previous reports have told us that customers may end up paying an additional monthly fee. But that is kind of expected, since you’d be paying the subsidized price of a new phone each time you upgrade. Once you’re signed up, you’ll no longer have to wait the full 2 years to upgrade your phone. This is definitely a good thing for people like us who are always looking for the next big thing to upgrade too. I know I upgrade my phone a few times a year, and this is definitely a plan I’d love to jump on. No pun intended.
T-Mobile’s competitors, AT&T and Verizon have just switched over to a 24-month upgrade eligibility plan. Which means you will have to wait out your full contract before you can upgrade with discounted pricing. That’s just wrong. But still not as bad as the three-year contracts up in Canada. I’m really hoping all these new plans T-Mobile is putting in place will work and be successful. They could really shake up the wireless industry, which really needs some innovation right now.
We’ll know all the details at T-Mobile’s press event later today. All the fun goes down at 2:30pm EST, 11:30am PST. As always we’ll be bringing you all the details.
