Google Glass is not much more than a huge question mark for most people. Only about 10,000 devices are out there in the wild which is nothing compared to the almost billion Android devices out there.
Every day we’re seeing people come up with new uses for the augmented reality glasses and new apps being demoed, but there’s zero information about the future retail unit. We do know that Google intended to have Glass out in the market by the end of the year but no announcement has been made.
Recently, two rumors started circling the web about this. The first rumor, started by tech journalist Robert Scoble on Google+, was that next year Google is going to rent 6,000 square feet of space inside Best Buy to sell Glass to consumers and the second one is that it will cost $299.99 a piece.
Both of these rumors were shot down yesterday by Google’s own Chris Dale on Twitter. Dale runs communications for Google Glass so his word should be considered 100 percent true.
We can hope for Glass to be under $300 but it will most likely be somewhere around the $500 mark, there’s no reason for it to cost that much less than an unlocked high-end smartphone.
As TechCrunch posted, a Best Buy spokesman said:
“At this point, we do not have plans to announce more collaborations. However, as our CEO Hubert Joly said during earnings this week, if a partnership makes sense for our customers, the vendor and Best Buy, we would be open to considering expansion.”
So, while no new information has appeared about the future of Glass, we can at least throw these rumors away. The Best Buy deal could end up true in the future but Google isn’t likely to be able to hit the $300 price point with such an advanced piece of tech, at least not with the first generation.
