LG gave up making Android tablets a while ago, but they might starting making them again, as it seems they’re planning to announce an 8.3″ display tablet in September, that will presumably be released this year, by Christmas. The tablet, named the “G Pad” is going to have a quad core processor (Snapdragon 800?), 1920×1200 resolution, and 2 GB of RAM.
That resolution makes it slightly less than 300 PPI, but if we look at the big iPad, it has 264 PPI, yet Apple still seems perfectly fine with promoting it as a “retina” tablet. I’m a little more concerned about the size of the screen and device, though. LG has proven they can make devices with very tiny bezels, with the LG G2, but it still seems like it will be bigger or at least as large as an iPad Mini in width, which I think is a little too much, because you can’t hold it with one hand very comfortably.
On the other hand, I also believe the Nexus 7 is a little too small. I think the optimal size is somewhere around 7.5″ or 7.7″. Even 8″ with a 16:10 ratio of Android tablets might work. The reason I wish the Nexus 7 had a bigger screen is to make it more appealing to people who are already using phones with larger screens. Someone who bought a phone that is 5″ or even larger, won’t be so compelled to buy a 7″ device.
LG seems to be on the rise lately, ever since they made the Nexus 4, and there are rumors they might make the next-gen Nexus phone, too. That helps to increase their popularity in the western tech media especially. I don’t like, however, that they still can’t give up getting “inspired” by Samsung so much.
They must think that’s actually helping them, but I think it’s holding them back. They could do a lot more if they weren’t so focused on doing whatever Samsung is doing, and actually tried to leapfrog them in many ways, or follow mobile trends that even Samsung isn’t following yet, such as using better phone materials, better designs, cleaner stock Android, and so on. They might find even more success that way. Either way, I would say to pay attention to this LG tablet, because other rumors were saying earlier that LG will be the one to make the next-gen Nexus 7 next year.
