For those of you looking to customize your new Moto X soon, you may have to think twice before you have your Moto X engraved. As Droid-Life noticed this morning, Motorola does not allow you to put “Samsung” on the back of your phone. Which I found pretty funny, but it’s probably more to do with trademarks and copyright infringement. Not only does it block “Samsung” it also blocks “Apple”, “Google” and many others. According to The Verge:
Anything you try with “Apple” in it will fall victim to the block, including “An Apple a Day” and “Apple Martin-Paltrow,” while “Powered by OS X” and “WebOS forever” slip through unscathed. “iPhone,” curiously, also makes it through.
So you’ll have to think twice before you engrave your new Moto X. It’s also important to note that engraving your Moto X means that it’ll be harder to sell your Moto X later on. But we won’t mind if everyone engraves their Moto X with “Android Headlines”. In addition to brands being blocked, it also blocks curse words. Which is probably a good thing.
By contrast, with Apple’s engraving service, you can use anything. Including Samsung, Google, LG, Motorola, etc., but it does prevent curse words as well.
MotoMaker should be going live next Friday when the device goes on sale on AT&T. Of course, it’s exclusive to AT&T, which is just the dumbest exclusive ever in my opinion, and will be coming to other carriers starting November 1st. Don’t forget the Moto X is coming to Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile (through Motorola). It’ll also be available on the Play Store eventually. But it’s sounding like it won’t be a Google Edition, which is a great thing.
How many of you are going to get your Moto X’s engraved? I’m not sure I’m going to get mine engraved but I’ll definitely be getting my hands on one eventually, and possibly making it my next phone on T-Mobile. How about the rest of you? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
