You know how we are usually saying that Verizon will get an update 6 months after everyone else? Well here’s some shocking news. Verizon has just approved Android 4.2 for the XOOM 4G LTE. Now we know it’s not the latest version of Android, but the Motorola XOOM WiFi that was an AOSP device, didn’t even get Android 4.2. So the LTE version getting it is a big surprise, even if it Verizon’s first device being updated to Android 4.2. The XOOM 4G LTE is only the fourth device to be updated to Android 4.2.2. That’s behind the Sony Xperia ZL, Xperia Z and HTC One (the HTC One update hasn’t rolled out worldwide yet).
This new update is build number JZ045M. The update is based off of Android 4.2, which brings XOOM owners from ICS up to Android 4.2 – Jelly Bean. I’ve got to say, I’m pretty impressed by this move. The update of course features Google Now, expandable notifications, multiple user accounts and a brand new keyboard. Also don’t forget about our favorite part….Project Butter. It’s not Android 4.3, but this is still a pretty big update for those that still have the XOOM 4G LTE. The tablet is pretty old, in fact Google stopped supporting the WiFi version one that was an AOSP device at Android 4.1.
The update has been approved but is not yet rolling out. We should start seeing it roll out over the weekend and into next week. We’re going to assume it’s a rather hefty update, probably around 300MB. So you’ll want to be sure you’re on WiFi to download this one.
Once you’ve gotten the update, be sure to head to our comments below and let us know how the update from Verizon and Motorola is treating you. I have to say, I’m still in shock that this update has been approved.
