Android Phone Wars: LG G2 vs Motorola DROID Maxx

This little phone war is a bit different from usual. We are comparing the LG G2 to the DROID Maxx which is a Verizon exclusive. So what we are going to do here is compare the Verizon variant of the G2 to the DROID Maxx, to make it a bit more fair. Especially since Verizon has changed quite a bit from the International G2. So let’s get this thing started already.

Specifications

LG G2

The LG G2 is LG’s first flagship that will be on all the carriers. It’s currently on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and I believe it’s coming to US Cellular as well. As most of you know, the Verizon G2 looks a bit different than the AT&T G2. For starters, Verizon changed the buttons on the back to be a bit thinner. They also got rid of Q Slide, which is one of my favorite features on the G2. Then they do have an “exclusive” on wireless charging though, for what it’s worth. As most of you know by now, the G2 has moved the power and volume rocker to the back of the device. MicroUSB and headphone jack still at the bottom.

The software on the G2 is quite refreshing too. While the device is heavily skinned, I was afraid that it might be a bit laggy, like a certain other device we saw earlier this year. But it’s very snappy, which is great to see. Some of my favorite features on the G2 include the Knock Knock feature, Q Slide, and Slide Aside, although I wish I could edit the notification shade.

Motorola DROID Maxx

The hardware on the DROID Maxx isn’t quite what we expected. It’s got a glossy plastic back, like most Samsung devices, and even the G2. The internals are also a bit subpar for something coming out in mid to late 2013. But it does have one thing going for it, and that’s the massive battery. Motorola’s promises 48 hours of battery out of this thing. Man that’s some good battery life right there.

As far as software goes, Motorola really optimized the DROID Maxx. Not only for battery, but to make it ultra smooth. It is running near stock Android with a few tweaks. Like the camera app is a bit different. Some of the other features on the DROID Maxx that I love is the Active Display, and the Always-On functionality with Google Now. It’s pretty awesome.

….And the Winner is…

This time last year, we were hard pressed to find a device that delivered battery life that could last a full day. Now here we are with two devices that can do a full day on battery. While the G2 is better spec’d, if you’re always out travelling or working, etc., and you need to be on LTE all the time. I’d actually say go with the DROID Maxx. Simply because it has a bigger battery, and a lower resolution display, meaning that it’ll use up less power. But if you want specs and great battery life. Then the G2 is a great choice, actually it’s the best choice.
