Android How to: Root the Moto X

Root used to be the first thing I’d do to a new device I would get. Mostly because stock Android just wasn’t cutting it. But over the past two years, Android has really improved, it all started with the Android 4.0 update back in 2011. While some devices are still a bit difficult to root, others like the Nexus line are pretty simple. Now that the Moto X has achieved Root, we thought we’d do a little tutorial to help you guys out.

Instructions

  1. Download the rooting app for the Moto X here. Be careful to get the right variant for your phone.
  2. Install it by typing:
‘adb install -r motoroot.apk’ (Note: filenames vary by device).
  3. Run the app on your device.
  4. Tap on the ‘Setup’ button and wait for the phone to reboot.
  5. Install SuperSU from the Play Store.
  6. Enjoy Root Access!

That’s really all there is to it. Now remember that rooting does void your warranty. So if you’re worried about that you probably shouldn’t be looking to root your phone in the first place. Now that you’re rooted, you won’t be receiving future updates from Motorola. In order to do that, you’ll need to unroot your device. Which isn’t too hard to do. While root has been achieved already for the Moto X (running Android 4.2.2), it may not be as easy with further updates as Motorola has been diligent about blocking most modding efforts on the Moto X. In fact, most ROMs won’t work as well as the stock ROM on the Moto X, which is rather surprising yet disappointing. But since it’s stock Android, more or less, you’ll probably still enjoy it, which is what Motorola wanted.
