During Samsung’s Unpacked 2013: Episode 2 event, Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear which is their smartwatch, along with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. We know that the Galaxy Gear is running on Android, and it’s most likely running Touchwiz as well. However, what kind of apps might we see on the Galaxy Gear? Perhaps some Twitter or Facebook apps?
Well Samsung has informed us about some of the apps that will run on the new smartwatch. Some of those include Path, Pocket, RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal, Phigolf, and many others. There are many others, in fact “many” might be an understatement. While we won’t list them all, we did notice some other big titles like Snapchat on the list. Imagine Snapchatting with your friends from your watch. Wouldn’t that be pretty cool?
The Galaxy Gear is coming to most markets later this month and launching with the Galaxy Note 3 in the US and Japan in October. The smartwatch from Samsung does only work with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) at this time. But Samsung has stated that an update is coming to the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 2 in October that will enable support for Galaxy Gear. It’s just a shame that it won’t be compatible with any Android device. That would be an absolute winner for many people. But it’s understandable why the smartwatch is Samsung only. Is to push more people to buy Samsung products. Brilliant from a marketing stand point.
So there’s already a lot of apps that will work on the Galaxy Gear, and I’m sure once this device gets on store shelves and more people get their hands on it, even more apps will be available. This would be a great device for Ingress, although probably not better than Ingress on Google Glass.
How many of our readers are planning to pick up the Galaxy Gear when it becomes available within the next month? Would this be your first smartwatch? Let us know in the comments down below.
