Last week, ASUS let the world know that today was the day that they’d release their new Padfone Infinity onto the world. Over in Taipei, ASUS has just done that, and the new phone/tablet hybrid is finally official. As the leaks and rumors suggested this is not a completely new model, rather more of an “update” to the original formula that was used in the Padfone Infinity. The headlining upgrades here are the Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2 Ghz, an added MicroSD card slot, an extra microphone for noise cancellation, some design tweaks and an update to Android 4.2 right out of the box.
Everything else from the original Infinity is still here, the 1080p 5-inch display, the 13MP f/2.0 camera et al – it’s all here. However, ASUS is also pushing their updated applications on the device. Promising much improved camera performance thanks to the revamped camera app that’s capable of a 35fps burst mode, of course that limits the capture resolution to just 3MP. However, that’s still pretty impressive.
Interestingly, ASUS has reduced the storage here from the 32 or 64GB options of the original to 16 or 32GB in this model. That’s somewhat understandable considering the inclusion of expandable storage but, it would be nice to see the 64GB option still available, even at a much higher price. This time around, the Padfone Infinity is available in Titanium Black or Platinum White, and as VR-Zone discovers it looks good in white:
For those looking to import, the same radios as before are supported: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100 / LTE 800/1800/2600. However, those a little closer to ASUS’ target market will be able to purchase the phone for NT$18,990 and the tablet dock for NT$7,000.
There’s no telling whether or not this is going to be coming to the States but, the likely answer is no. ASUS hasn’t bought the Padfone west before and we doubt they’re going to start with this revamped model. It’d be nice if they would however, as we’re sure there’s a market out there for something like this, after all ASUS wouldn’t keep on making them if there weren’t. What do you guys think?
