Lenovo to Go Global With Vibe Line; Coming to the US in the Near Future

Recently, we’ve been hearing a lot about Lenovo when it comes to smartphones and tablets. While that might strange coming from the company that makes the ThinkPad, the company has gained a great deal of market share these past two years. Not just that but, the company’s mobile division – including tablets – has now overtaken their PC side of the business, in terms of sales. With much of the world “going mobile” these days, that’s perhaps not as surprising as it might have been a year or so ago but, this is Lenovo we’re talking about. A relative newcomer to the mobile world, at least compared to Samsung, Apple and Motorola.

Still, where is Lenovo when it comes to the US – or the rest of the Western world for that matter? Well, things are set to change on that front as Lenovo are hoping to spread their Vibe line across the West. The Vibe X and the Vibe Z represent the best that Lenovo has to offer when it comes to smartphones and fans of their devices will recognize some similarities with older devices.

Announced at IFA, the Vibe X is a pretty decent smartphone. Certainly one that wouldn’t look out-of-place on a shelf next to Samsung or HTC’s offerings. It’s a sleek device with an understated profile. It’s a classy-looking device that’s for sure. What’s on the inside isn’t too shabby, either:

  • 5-inch 1920—1080 resolution Full HD IPS Display that’s 440 pixels per inch, with Gorilla Glass 3
  • 6.9mm thin or thick
  • 13MP auto-focus, rear facing camera with LED flash and a back-illuminated sensor
  • 5MP front-facing camera with a wide-angle 84-degree lens
  • Quad-core MediaTek MTK 6589T processor clocked at 1.5GHz
  • Android 4.2 – Jelly BEan
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage

Meanwhile, the Vibe Z is very much a successor to the successful K900, that only launched in Asia. This time around, the Vibe Z is the same size at 5.5-inches, with a 1080p panel and the same Snapdragon 800 that’s been in so many Fall 2013 devices already.

  • 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 Display
  • Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 at 2.2 Ghz
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 6.9mm thick
  • Android 4.2.2
  • 13MP rear-facing camera with flash, 5MP front-facing camera

Lenovo has already said that these devices will be launching later this year in other countries, including the US. If Lenovo were to launch these devices in the US – and score a carrier partnership – then they could well have a big impact on the US market. What do you guys think? If Lenovo walk into the US, should Samsung, Motorola, HTC et al be worried?
