Here we go folks. It looks like Google is going to take the wraps off of their newest Nexus phone (and probably a new Nexus 10) along with Android 4.4 KitKat on October 14th. Now remember this is a rumor, so we’ll be treating it as such.
An anonymous source was speaking with AusDroidrevealed that the device on the KitKat video is definitely the Nexus 5. Which we’ve also seen visit the FCC a few times already. The Nexus 5 is still set to go on sale sometime in November, which sounds about right, considering the Nexus 4 went on sale in early November last year.
As most of you saw in the images we’ve posted over the past few days, it looks like the Nexus 5 is going to have a matte finish, and look a bit like the Nexus 7 (2013)’s design. Which sounds great, I’d love to see the Nexus family have a unified design. Much like all of Samsung’s devices look relatively the same.
Additionally, the specs for the Nexus 5 appear to be a 4.96-inch display, with a Snapdragon 800 processor which is quad-core and clocked at 2.26GHz. We’re also thinking we’ll see 2GB of RAM along with 2300mAh battery. I’d like to see a bigger battery, especially if the display does get bumped up to a 1080p display. On the other hand, we might see some battery optimizations in Android 4.4. But that’s also something we’ve been hoping for, for quite a while.
Some of the rumors for the KitKat update include new notification widgets, fragmentation changes, new gallery visualizations, new animation APIs and miracast updates. I’m sure we’ll see even more features coming in KitKat as well, since it’s gotta be a bigger update than 4.2 or 4.3 was since they are changing the name of it.
So there you have it. We’ll be sure to mark our calendars for October 14th. We’ll hopefully get some invites from Google soon about an event for the Nexus 5/Android 4.4 event.
