Today we have the battle of the Max(es) – The HTC One Max and the Motorola Droid MAXX, and it should make for some interesting comparisons, even though the Droid MAXX has been on the market since August 20 and the HTC One Max has not yet seen the light of day, but will very soon. Both phones are the typical Motorola and HTC quality inside and out, with the edge going to the HTC One Max’s beautiful aluminum body and design, that made the HTC One so popular. The Motorola has a tough kevlar backing with a pattern and makes for a very nice looking device. When it comes to materials, there are two distinctive camps – on one side you have the metal/glass group and on the other hand, you have buyers that refuse to buy into the good looks of the metal/glass because they can break easier, and the metal can get dinged when dropped – only you can decide what is right for you.
The other big difference is the size – the HTC One Max has a 5.9-inch screen vs. the 5-inch display on the Motorola Droid MAXX, so this will translate in a longer, wider, thicker, and heavier device. Here again, only you can decide if the extra screen real estate is worth the added bulk and largely depends on how you use your smartphone…if you read, watch videos/movies, and play games, the larger screen makes a world of difference. When we take a look and compare the specifications of both phones, the processors, RAM, and internal storage is about the same, although a slight edge goes to the HTC One Max’s processor…now let’s look at the individual phones and see what makes them different from one another.

HTC One Max
The HTC One Max is a huge phablet, even besting the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 by 13.3mm in length! While the use of “last year’s” processor is a little disappointing for a device that is to compete with the “big boys,” the HTC One Max makes up with a gorgeous 5.9-inch 1920×1080 Super LCD3 display with 373 ppi, and fantastic sound from its dual stereo speakers. It also has a microSD slot to expand your internal storage and it is also running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box. It uses only a 4MP camera, but it is HTC’s UltraPixel sensor and gives quite good low-light photos. It is also sporting a fingerprint scanner/sensor on the rear of the device, directly under the camera and LED flash. The HTC One Max is also available on Verizon and Sprint, with rumors of it going to AT&T as well. The price is not known at this time, but you can be sure it will be at least $299 on contract.
Motorola Droid MAXX
The Motorola Droid MAXX is a confusing device and other than the huge 3500mAh battery, the rest of the specs for a $299 phone are less than stellar…even the display is so last year with a 1280×720 and 294 ppi; it is not to say it doesn’t look nice, but certainly not up to today’s high-end displays. There is no microSD card slot, so you are stuck with the 32GB of storage that comes on the phone. The camera, never one of Motorola’s strong points, is a 10MP shooter that takes average photos. The other item holding the Droid MAXX back is that fact that it is only available on Verizon, making it less accessible than other phones, including the HTC One Max.
…And the Winner is…
The HTC One Max is simply too intriguing not to pick as the winner. It has a better display, room for expansion with a microSD card, better camera, better speakers, and it comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Compared to the Motorola Droid MAXX, its only drawback, if you can call it that is its size…it may just be too large for some people to carry comfortably around, however, if you watch a lot of videos, then the size and speakers will be a welcomed addition. It will be interesting to see how well the battery holds up in everyday use, but that is why we have a charger.
