Just because we don’t have enough messaging apps already, a new report is stating that Twitter is working on their own standalone messaging app. Because Whatsapp, Hangouts, Kik, Line, KakaoTalk, and the hundred others aren’t enough to choose from. This report is coming out of AllThingsD, which normally has a good reputation. AllThingsD is citing “people familiar with the situation” that Twitter is getting ready to completely overhaul their direct messaging feature, and create a separate core Twitter app. Now this is exactly what Facebook has done. They actually have three apps. One for Facebook, then Facebook Messenger and Facebook Pages Manager.
This report is pretty crazy. Why? Well Twitter had thought about getting rid of Direct Messages altogether. Instead the company decided to just not pay attention to the feature at all. Lately, we’ve seen plenty of messaging apps just explode in the marketplace. With Blackberry Messenger coming to Android and iOS sometime, who knows when, soon. We kinda figured they’d want to get their foot in the door as well.
Lately, Twitter has made some big steps with their Android app. It used to be a very bad experience on Android, which is why so many of us used third-party apps like Plume, Falcon Pro and Carbon. But within the last year or so the App has gotten a ton of useful updates, in fact it’s my main client now for Twitter. What would be interesting is, to see how the messaging app would differ from the Direct messaging feature from within their current app. It’d also be interesting to see which platforms it launches on. Pretty sure it’ll come to Android and iOS, but Windows Phone is another story.
So that brings us to our readers. Should Twitter venture into the instant-messaging world with Direct Messages? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
