A great new app from Cloud.tv, Dayframe is now out of beta, and is available to download for free, although a paid version with more options will also be making its way to the Google Play Store. This app, in the simplest of terms, takes your android tablet or smartphone and turns it into a digital photo gallery, much like the separate digital frames you can buy. However, make no mistake, this app is not simplistic in its approach to displaying your photos, or anybody elses’ that shares on the social services…easy to setup, but powerful options and features are available.
Another nice feature is that Dayframe has already been updated to take advantage of Android 4.4 KitKat, and while not many devices yet have that upgrade, when they receive it, many new features, such as full-framed photos, will be available for you to view. We started placing a digital frame in our living room and when guests come over we have past photos taken of them, randomly displaying themselves. Quite honestly, we were not sure if that was “creepy” or not; we almost felt like stalkers, but our guests have assured us that they enjoyed looking at them and were honored that we were that thoughtful – of course, they’ve never come back!
You can import your pictures from a variety of sources, including your own computer or gallery:
- Tumblr
- Flickr
- Dropbox
- 500px
- Google+
Personally, I find it a little strange that you would want to look at other people’s photos all day long, but to each their own. We take a lot of photos, but maybe some of you would rather live vicariously through someone else’s life – but seriously, this allows you to show your kids’ or friends’ pictures that you would otherwise not see and enjoy.
Set your smartphone on your desk at work (a stand always looks good) and watch photos of your family, relatives, or even a particular person, whose photos or drawings you admire, as the day passes by. Show them off to your co-workers or friends, the possibilities are endless. Here are some of the easy setup screens you will come across:
