Experiencing Issues with the Android 4.4 OTA on your Nexus 4? You're Not Alone!

Seems like every time we see an update to a new version of Android, there are issues with the older hardware. Back with Android 4.3, I remember there were some issues with the original Nexus 7 and Nexus 4. Now with the Android 4.4 – KitKat update, there appears to be some issues with the Nexus 4 and its OTA update. Users are reporting issues with the home button not working properly, the Settings toggle acting up, and even the dialer being broken. Which makes the phone almost unusable for some.

Now, as expected, this doesn’t affect all Nexus 4 devices. And these issues haven’t cropped up in the Nexus forums yet, we’ve still been getting reports from various users about these issues. There’s also a report that there’s a faulty microphone, which has been noticed during search, video capture and most importantly phone calls.

There are plenty of other issues being reported too. The folks over at Android Police seem to believe that the issues are because of the OTA update. However, I haven’t noticed any issues with my own Nexus 4. But then again, I haven’t used it much since I got the Nexus 5. So it could just be that I haven’t used it enough.

So how do we fix it? Easy, well kinda. Just do a factory reset. As usual with problems from an OTA, a complete factory reset will solve the problems. Now I know it’s not the best choice, but it’s better than nothing, I guess. We’re hoping Google will push out a fix rather shortly to fix these issues, but if your dialer isn’t working or something else isn’t that you need everyday, then I’d suggest doing a factory reset. Which is easy to do. Just hop into Settings then Backup and Reset and tap on Factory data reset. Of course you’ll want to make sure your files are all backed up, since you are basically making this phone brand new again.
