Motorola’s most recent device, the Moto G, rocked the world mobile tech market a couple weeks ago when it launched. The phone’s above average specs but ridiculous price tag off-contract (making it cost even less than the Nexus 5) make it ideal for emerging world markets, as well as people in the U.S. that just want a no-frills, cheap but reliable smartphone.
Today, TELUS and Koodo Mobile became the first mobile carriers in the North American continent to launch the Moto G. The phone starts at a ridiculous $200 off contract, and absolutely free for a two year contract according to Mobilesyrup’s report.. Pretty enticing, if you ask me, especially for those who want to give Android a try for the first time or just need a good budget phone.
The phone comes equipped with a Quad-Core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage – 5.2 of which are available to the user. All of this is powering Android 4.3 (Motorola has promised the Moto G will get Android 4.4 by January of 2014) on a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 HD display, which Motorola touts as the ‘sharpest in its class’.
The Moto G is an impressive foray into the budget phone market, which has been a sore spot for Android for many years. The devices that are considered ‘low-budget’, very often, aren’t even worth buying at all. And while those devices are slowly being pushed out of the market with the help of Motorola’s Droid Mini, HTC One Mini and now the Moto G, we still have to hope that the Moto G will succeed, and then subsequently prompt the market to start paying better attention to its lower cost smartphones, and to make sure that just because they’re lower cost, doesn’t mean their necessarily low quality.
The Moto G will also feature several replaceable back covers, giving users some of the customization options offered by the Moto X, despite the fact that Moto Maker will not be available for this phone.
