With Android 4.4.1 starting to roll out to Nexus devices earlier today, the Android 4.4.1 KitKat source code has finally now just been released to the public. The code is available in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository where it is now available for download and sync.
While this won’t mean much to most of the public, it is of major significance to manufacturers who can start work on creating KitKat updates for handsets already running Android 4.4 This would be the Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play Edition smartphones only, really. The Motorola X is due an Android 4.4.1 update too as it is already running Android 4.4 as well.
This also means custom software based off of Android 4.4.1 should be coming quite soon. Android 4.4 custom software and roms has already been available for sometime on most Nexus smartphones.
For those in the dark here, Android 4.4.1 KtKat includes a good deal of bug fixes, including possible speed enhancements and improved camera capability on the Nexus 5. It is unclear what else users will get with the upgrade but we’ll find out all the details soon when some talented folks start digging around. Bug-fixing is probably going to be the biggest addition, however.
Android 4.4 launched first on the Google Nexus 5, the first KitKat smartphone. The Nexus 5 is available now in Google Play for an amazingly low price. For stock Android fans it is a great deal. The new OS is available now on the Nexus 4, the 2013 Nexus 7, and the 2012 Nexus 7.
