The initial information from the LG camp had pegged their latest flagship – the LG G2 to receive the bump to Android 4.4 Kit Kat for November / December. However, the latest information trickling in says otherwise, at least for the French version. SFR France has posted in a blog update that the handset would be upgraded to Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat sometime in “early 2014”. The carrier further points out that the software is currently under a technical testing phase and SFR France are hopeful of releasing the update during January last week, though they have careful to not mention any specific dates.
Leaked images across the internet have surfaced, which show the LG G2 running Android 4.4 Kit Kat. The initial leaks coming from South Korea notwithstanding, LG and its carrier partners are yet to release the update officially. Though SFR France has made its stand clear and provided an update plan for early 2014, LG Canada has said that the LG G2 owners would have to wait longer – up to March 2014 to be specific – to get Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat on their devices.
For those who are more daring than most Android users, the Android 4.4 Kit Kat goodness can be had through the route of custom ROMs. The CyanogenMod devs have released the stable M1 builds as well as some cutting edge Nightly builds for the LG G2; which brings with it the sweet flavors of Android 4.4.1 Kit Kat and some additional goodies – like the DSP equalizer and Whisperpush (for super-secretive encrypted messaging). Over at XDA Developers forums, other devs have created their own flavors for the LG G2 with Kit Kat on board. The Verizon LG G2 already has a custom Kit Kat ROM. Be warned though, installing a custom ROM will void your warranty and may result in unwanted or untoward device behavior.
Even though, feature-wise, the LG G2 is the bigger sibling to the LG made Google Nexus 5, the device does not share the privilege of getting the latest Android builds as fast as its Nexus counterpart. Though LG has been criticized in the past for delayed software updates, their Google Play edition (GPe) tablet – the LG G Pad 8.3 GPe has seen a recent software version bump to Android 4.4.2; however a GPe device will definitely get updates much faster than its siblings which have a lot of custom bloatware designed by the OEMs.
