For almost an entire year now, we have been hearing rumors that LG is willing to home-grow an octa-core processor for its mobile devices line, however nothing concrete had turned up – until now. The guys over at AnTuTu (the well-known mobile benchmarks) have had a run-in with an LG Odin bearing prototype. Though no confirmation exists, this prototype could belong to another rumored LG device – the sequel to the LG G2, for now called as the LG G3.
Around Christmas, we heard rumors from South Korea – the LG homeland – that the LG G3 would be the first device to be powered by the LG Odin octa-core chip. However, the prototype device which was benchmarked on AnTuTu was clocked at 100 MHz to 1080 MHz, which would be sub-par for any flagship. Other information tidbits point to a 1920 x 1080 p full-HD display, 2GB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, a 13 mega pixels (MP) primary camera as well as a 1.3 MP front facing video call camera. The prototype was tested with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean onboard. If this is the purported LG G3, don’t read much into these specs, this is just a prototype and we believe the final device would definitely pack a 2K display. But again, we are just reiterating what the rumor mill is churning out.
Going by the AnTuTu results, the LG Odin is not a true octa core processor, which means that all eight cores wouldn’t be fired up simultaneously. Since the results are very similar to those scored by the Samsung Exynos 5410 octa-core processor, the LG Odin is also based on the big.LITTLE system-on-Chip (SoC) architecture which implies that the LG Odin would consist of a quad-core ARM Cortex A15 CPU coupled with a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 CPU, wherein both the CPUs would alternately handle the heavy-weight activities, while the second set would handle other lightweight actions.
The LG Odin packs the new Power VR Series 6 GPU, which is the same series that run on the Apple iPhone 5S. The Power VR Series 6 GPU has turned out to be a performance beast and we can expect good things from the LG Odin graphics-wise. All in all the LG Odin would power up the LG G3 – or whatever LG wishes to call their next flagship device.
