In an effort to combat T-Mobile’s UnCarrier strategy, AT&T announced a few days ago that they would be adding several new plans to lower cost and at least make the appearance of competing with T-Mobile. Neither Verizon’s Edge or AT&T’s Next Plans can compete with T-Mobile’s JUMP! Plan, but appearances must be kept up. You must ask to be moved into these lower cost programs because AT&T will not automatically move your account – they will probably say it is because they are not allowed to “break the contract” you have with them without your permission, even if it means you will save some money on your monthly bill.
Our friends over at TechnoBuffalo had a personal experience of having a $200 a month 20GB data plan and dropping his costs down to $150 a month. However, your personal savings will depend on the number of devices on your account as well as the amount of data you use each month – you may or may not save money, but it is certainly worth going to an AT&T store to discuss it or simply give them a call.
AT&T has made so many changes it is hard to tell if you are really getting a bargain or not. The more expensive your plan, the more of a discount you could conceivably receive. David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility said in their press release:
“With our new Mobile Share Value Plans, customers don’t have to compromise. Our new no contract option lets customers add a smartphone to the nation’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network at a lower monthly cost. Customers want great value and a premium network – and now they can save more and get unlimited talk, text and data to share.”
All of these new options are available now from AT&T and while the wording and changes are rather confusing, it would certainly be worth it for you to contact AT&T and see what all of your options are – even $5-$10 a month savings is well worth the effort.
