Earlier this morning, Motorola launched three more wood backs for the Moto X. Which will be available starting Tuesday, January 21st. They also dropped the price from being an additional $100 to just an additional $25. Which is a much better price, especially after dropping the off-contract price to $399 not too long ago.
These new wood backs, Ebony, Teak and Walnut join Bamboo in the ‘Natural’ section of MotoMaker for the backs you can choose for your Moto X. Many were wondering if they were just finishes or natural, we were even talking about it internally. Well the folks at Droid Life spoke with Motorola and let them know they are indeed wood. However they are then treated to give off the look of Ebony, Teak or Walnut. Basically, we are looking at a wood back “but Ebony, Teak and Walnut are treated with their indicated finish to adjust the color and design.” It appears that with the Bamboo back you are getting just Bamboo, no extra treatment or finish. We still have no clue on what kind of wood they are using initially before the treatment.
This is kind of what we figured, but we weren’t 100% sure. However, now we know for certain. Remember that these are still made of wood, so you’ll still have a design that no one else will have. Although, for those that were looking for a Moto X with a pure Ebony, Walnut or Teak backing, well you’ll have to keep looking. We don’t know the exact reasons why Motorola didn’t opt to use pure Ebony, Walnut or Teak wood on the Moto X’s, but these wood backs do look really nice, still.
