We’ve heard so much about Nokia’s upcoming Android phone that it almost feels like we should be able to go out and buy one right about now. However, that’s not the case and it seems that either @evleaks has really stepped up his game or Nokia’s PR department is being careless with their info. Either way, we now know more about the Nokia X than we suspect the Finnish company wanted us to know. There’s been a little more information hitting the Internet these past couple of days or so, and now we know the sort of internals that the Nokia X is going to be packing. A recent tweet from @evleaks details a mid/low-end device powered by a dual-core Snapdragon CPU, an 800 x 480 4-inch display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of Storage (with a microSD card slot), a 5-megapixel camera and a 1,500 mAh. So, there you have it, a fairly boring device from Nokia, at least when it comes to specs. However, this is not what the Normandy, sorry X, is all about for Nokia. Instead, this is more of a device built to leverage the low resource consumption of Android 4.4 KitKat.
Nokia’s Asha line has been serving emerging markets for a couple of years now, but with devices like the Moto G and offerings from Samsung, Sony et al offering much better value-for-money, Nokia’s dumbphones aren’t cutting it any more. So, it looks like they’ve finally turned to Android in order to regain some of their market share in emerging markets and with Android 4.4 KitKat, they might just be able to do it. This all feels a little too late however, and the fact that the interface we’ve seen so far looks like Windows Phone, it leads us to ask – why not just use Windows Phone? The answer would be that Nokia has tried to make low-end handsets with Windows Phone before, but failed miserably as these devices ended up cutting more corners than they eventually shipped with.
One more piece of information that hit the web is that the Nokia X is going to be shipping in a number of different colors, 6 of them to be precise. This is hardly surprising, as they’ve become known for their colorful Lumia line in the last few years. It’s nice to see some Nokia color finally hit Android, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that this is certainly not the ‘droid we were looking for.
