The real fun at CES is not necessarily seeing what interesting devices are going to be released in the first or second quarter of 2014, but to see what the manufacturers are envisioning for the future – what directions their thought process is taking them. Samsung, never one to shy away from its imagination, gives us a glimpse of new ways to use their devices when they team up their Galaxy Note 3 smartphone or Galaxy Gear smartwatch with a Trek Bike. Our friends from Phandroid were there and did a short video of this prototype idea. Okay, Trek Bikes is not a BMW car, but certainly the BMW of bikes, so if Samsung can pair up the Galaxy Gear to a BMW, why not a Trek Bike as well?
Samsung is thinking, we have these great products and apps, why not use those devices to help make those exercising bicyclists’ lives easier, more informed and add a little more fun into their workout. Working together, Samsung and Trek Bikes are hoping to bring information to their riders by adding a dock in the middle of the handlebars to hold either a Galaxy Note 3 or a Galaxy Gear.
The trick is in the handlebars, where the one Trek Bike that holds the Galaxy Gear, has the appearance that the Galaxy Gear and handlebars are as one, but what is really cool is that there is a device down by the wheel that transmits information by pairing with the Galaxy Gear, and the app allows you to store that information for later reference – things such as speed, distance, calories burned, etc.
The other Trek Bike concept has a docking station in the middle of the handlebars that your Galaxy Note 3 would sit in while you ride, and again, the interesting part is that there is a device on the front wheel that will actually charge your Note 3 while you are peddling so you will never drain your device on those long bike rides or cross-country races. So go ahead and listen to music, watch a video or movie, use GPS, and use Google Maps to find your way home – the device will remained charged up for that phone call asking for someone to pick you up and give you a ride home.
Let us know on our Google+ Page what you think of this design and product – are they something that you would be interested in having and would this combination persuade you to purchase either a Trek Bike or Samsung product just to be able to use this setup.
