Sony is also making the jump into the “mini” market. We’ve seen Samsung, Motorola, and HTC make “mini” devices in 2013. And well, Sony did actually make a Xperia Z1 mini a.k.a. Xperia Z1f, but it was only available in Japan. Today, at CES, Sony announced the Xperia Z1 Compact which for all intents and purposes is a Xperia Z1 mini. The Xperia Z1 Compact is water-resistant, along with the metal and glass design. It does also have 4G LTE built in, which is nice to have. There’s also the quad-core processor, and a 20MP camera on board, all with a 4.3-inch display. However, the display is a 720p display. But that’s still plenty at 4.3-inches. It keeps a PPI of 340 pixels per inch. The Xperia Z1 Compact also has 16GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card inside.
Best spec of all of the Xperia Z1 Compact is the fact that it is running Android 4.4 – KitKat. The Xperia Z1 Compact is one of the first “mini” phones out there to come with the same specs as it’s big brother. The only other one to do that is the Motorola DROID Mini. We haven’t gotten hands on with the Xperia Z1 Compact yet, but we should have hands on rather soon. So stay tuned for that.
At this point, there’s no word on availability, but I’m assuming it’s only coming to the US unlocked…at least at this point. The Xperia Z1 Compact should be heading to the UK and other parts of Europe, and we’re expecting an asking price of around £400 and £450. Which translates to about $656 USD.
