Sony Xperia Z1 Compact Gets Root and Custom Recovery Before Launch

Sony’s Xperia lineup of phones is filled with fantastic devices all around.  Recently they blew the lid off the Xperia Z1 Compact, which is a 4.3-inch version of Sony’s excellent Xperia Z1, complete with top-of-the-line specs and all.  Many users still want a top-tier phone without the size that seems to come with such a high-specced Android phone nowadays, and this is the perfect opportunity.  If you haven’t seen the Xperia Z1 Compact before, know that you’re getting the same 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 20.7 megapixel camera and of course water-resistant body that the Xperia Z1 features, just a bit smaller.  Android purists and modders will be happy to know as well that the Xperia Z1 Compact has already been rooted and has received its own version of the popular Android customer recovery, ClockworkMod.  For those curious this is CWM 6.0.4.6, which is the newest build of ClockworkMod, and means you’ll have no problems flashing those Android 4.4 KitKat based ROMs as soon as they come out.

Right now XDA-Developers, the popular forum where many of the best ROMs around can be found, doesn’t even have an Xperia Z1 Compact section yet, so this has been placed in the Xperia Z1 section for the time being, which also means there aren’t any ROMs yet available for the Z1 Compact.  Seeing as there are no ROMs yet for the phone, and you probably can’t get your hands on one yet anyway, flashing this recovery won’t do you a whole lot of good in the short-term, but obviously it’s great for long-term development.  Requirements for flashing the recovery are an unlocked bootloader, and instructions can be found right here to do that.  Remember that if you decide to unlock your Xperia Z1 Compact you’ll lose any DRM keys stored in the device, rendering certain media on the device useless, so make sure to unlock before you start stocking the phone full of stuff.  Since the phone isn’t out yet, you can still pre-order it if you’re in Europe and receive a free Sony Smartwatch 2 while supplies last, so if you’re interested in the latest top-of-the-line device without all the size, and the guaranteed ability to get root access out of the box, Sony’s Xperia Z1 Compact is the phone you’re looking for right now.
