Tablets May Replace Cameras, Thanks to Sony's Tablet Attachment for Their Lens Style Cameras

Mobile photography has picked up a great deal these last few years. Our smartphones have practically replaced the digital camera for those casual shots and the occasional selfies we have come to love. However, even the best camera on the best flagship device out there doesn’t have anything on the DSLRs of the world. To remedy this situation Sony had launched ‘lens-style’ cameras- the DSC-QX10 and the DSC-QX100 – which could be paired to any smartphone or tablet through Wi-Fi or NFC.

Last week, we got information that the Japanese manufacturer had launched special cases for the Sony Xperia Z Ultra (the tablet-phablet-I-am-confused device) and the more compact, but powerful, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. These camera cases snap onto the back of the respective smartphones and have a simple provision to attach the lens-style cameras on the back – effectively transforming a humble smartphone into a powerful camera.

Sony seems driven to push its attachable lens-style camera series the QX10 and QX100 into the minds and hands of owners of their latest smartphone and tablet devices. In the latest news, Sony has announced the launch of a new line of camera lens mounts, which would fit on any device which would be in the range of 85 mm to 190 mm in width. The dimensions are in line with those of most tablet devices; however Sony definitely had their own range of tablet and Vaio devices in mind while doing the designs.

The camera lens mount is specifically designed for the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lens-style cameras and goes by the nomenclature SPA-TA1. The SPA-TA1 comes in 6 different arm sizes – weighing in at 31 grams and is designed to fit across the size range of tablet devices.  The SPA-TA1 is scheduled to launch on 4th April 2014 in Japan and would be available for a nominal price of 3675 Yen (£21, €26, $36 depending on the conversion rate). For now there is no confirmation whether the attachment would ever be launched in the Western World. But we can sure do hope. Would you be interested in getting your hands on one of these anytime soon? Do let us know in the comments below.
