Geeksphone had launched the Firefox OS developer preview edition devices – Keon and Peak – almost a year ago. Since then any news on the launch of Firefox OS was few and far between. However in the latest update, it appears that images of a Geeksphone device – the Geeksphone Revolution – have been spotted online (Check out the image at the start of this article). The device is touted to be a phone for every geek who wants to test out Firefox OS, without losing out on the familiarity and features of Android. Having recently announced the “NSA-proof” Blackphone, it looks like Geeksphone is on a roll.
The design principle of the Geeksphone Revolution reflects a rather subdued design, without any aspect being too striking. It appears as if the designer of the device has taken leaf out of Google’s design book for the Nexus 5, the Moto X, the Moto G as well as the ZTE Geek. The speaker grill and Intel logo, along with the Geeksphone logo and the device’s name are the only embellishments of the device, which is definitely not going for a fashion statement.
The Geeksphone Revolution is the first phone to dual-boot Android with Firefox OS and is powered an Intel processor. Other specifications include a 4.7 inch screen with 960 x 540 pixels resolutions (which comes up to an acceptable 234 ppi) and a 2,000 mAh battery. Notable features point to a primary camera (of unknown resolution) with flash; a front facing camera is conspicuously missing. Other details as of yet are absconding, and we will update you once we get to know more about this device – which includes pricing and availability information, both of which are missing as of now.
The Keon and Peak were launched by Geeksphone as developer devices, however if the Revolution is being aimed at the mass market, it is a smart move on their part. The success of Android evidences the fact that it all ultimately boils down to choice given to the user. As a user, if I had the choice to dual-boot Firefox OS on my Android device, I would definitely give Firefox OS a go, because the familiarity and peace of mind given by Android would just be a reboot away.
