As we head down the road to Mobile World Congress, which kicks off on February 24th, we’re hearing more and more from all the OEMs out there as to what will be announced and/or shown off. Now we already know that Samsung is holding an Unpacked event on February 24th, which all but confirms a Galaxy S5 launch. We also know that LG is announcing the LG G Pro 2 at Mobile World Congress, and Motorola is also having an event, but we’re not sure they are actually announcing anything new.
Now it’s time to turn our attention to one of the bigger Chinese manufacturers out there, Huawei. Back at CES, they announced the Ascend Mate 2, which is an amazing device with a huge battery that can charge another phone. But for Mobile World Congress it looks like they are shifting their attention to tablets, and a smartwatch. Even though they are rumored to announce a new smartphone as well, which won’t be the successor to the Ascend P6 which was announced last year. But they are planning to announce a brand new flagship later this month in Barcelona.
Huawei, is also looking to jump into the wearable game with a smartwatch. Which could be the right time for them to do so as there’s not a whole lot of OEMs out there with smartwatches. With Huawei being the #3 manufacturer worldwide, it’s gonna be easy for them to grab a nice chunk of market share from their competitors. Especially over in Asia and such. Hopefully, their smartwatch will fix what the others still need to fix, like notifications, or black/white displays.
We said last month that this was going to be the year of the smartwatches, and so far it has been just that. I’d expect to see a few more at Mobile World Congress as well. We may see more smartwatches than smartphones. But then again, this is a mobile show and not just a consumer electronics show like CES is.
