We have seen some beautiful displays out there. The high-resolution revolution began back when Apple first made a big deal over its Retina display, and that technology gives resolutions ranging from 220ppi to 326ppi, depending on the size of the device. Innovation has since blown such numbers out of the water, giving us phones and tablets with higher resolutions than that. One of the highest resolution we have seen is on the Chinese exclusive high-end smartphone called the Vivo XPlay 3S, which sports an incredible 6 inch display with 2560 x 1440 490ppi. Just so we are all on the same page, ‘ppi’ means ‘pixels-per-inch’, or the number of controllable elements on a display per inch. This means that the phone can control what is happening on the screen to an insane degree, making images look so much sharper and more defined.
The question remains though; is it worth it? With all those elements to control, there will be an obvious effect of battery life. The phone has to work more, so obviously battery life will take a hit, unless the Chinese manufacturer has used some unknown witchcraft on it. As we cannot really tell the difference between the resolution of this phone and another HD phone in casual usage, there comes a point where we think that ‘enough is enough’, and that manufacturers should focus on improving battery life. Now, of course there will be a difference in how the screen displays certain colors and what not, but the biggest factor in that regard is what kind of display is used, not the pixel density. The XPlay 3S makers laughed in the face of that statement and cooked up one of the highest resolution screens we have seen so far. Hopefully, this bad boy will live up to the hype.
The phone itself has a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 3,200 mAh battery. There is also a 13MP primary camera, placed near the fingerprint scanner on the back, and a 5MP secondary front facing camera. The phone is running Vivo’s version of an Android ROM, called Funtouch OS, that has a plethora of features that focus on photo and video editing and sharing. The phone is going to be on sale in China for the equivalent of $580, which does not seem bad for a phone of those specs and that screen quality. The maker says that they have plans to expand overseas, so we may or may not see this beast grace our shores. What do you think? Is the 490ppi really necessary?
