Xperia Devices Still Lack KitKat, But The Gallery App Gets KitKat Support Through An OTA

In a weird, (but maybe not so much so) twist of events, Sony has apparently updated the Xperia Gallery app to support Kit Kat, even though the Xperia devices don’t have the official Android 4.4.2 update yet. This could mean a number of things. The first initial thought is that maybe this is pointing towards Sony preparing to update devices, in fact that is exactly what they’re doing. They’re preparing the app to be ready for Kit Kat when it arrives. There’s just no telling when exactly they were setting the OTA up to roll out, but perhaps the fact that they’re getting on-device core apps ready means that it might be soon? If you’re an Xperia device owner, you can look at this as Sony rolling out the red carpet so to speak for the 4.4.2 update when it is ready for prime time.

As you would expect, the updated version of the gallery app comes with the oh so cool immersive mode that makes just about any app more enjoyable. This is of course coming from credible sources close to Sony that have actually tested the updated gallery app on an Xperia device that is already running the 4.4.2 version of Android. If you have been able to update your device and get kit kat support for the gallery app, and you have a kit kat based ROM on your Xperia device, you could always test the immersive mode out for yourself. This update didn’t just bring KitKat support of course, as any great update usually comes with a few bug fixes and at least one other feature, along with some boosted performance of the app. If you have this update you might notice some tweaks and fixes, so if there was a bug you were experiencing with the gallery app or anything else, this may have fixed it. The app should also run smoother. As for what else is new, the app is all ready to give an enhanced integration experience with PlayMemories online which is Sony’s cloud based for photos and videos. Integration of PlayMemories Online isn’t new, but it is enhanced so there might be some new features of that in particular.

Itching to get your hands on the update now? If so, that’s perfect. Pick up your device and jump into the Sony Update Center to grab the update. Remember that it’s an OTA, so depending on your circumstances, you may be better off updating while on Wifi.
