Just last week we received an updated Android KitKat 4.4.2 schedule from Rogers and the Samsung Galaxy S4 had the convenient coming soon tag next to it. Well, we are happy to tell you that coming soon means TODAY! Rogers is rolling out the update as we write and you read – as always these updates are of a rolling nature, so if you have not received your update, it should be coming soon…sometimes it can take up to 2 or 3 days. You can always go do a manual check at Settings/General/About Phone/Software updates menu. The update is about 415MB in size so make sure you are near a good Wi-Fi connection.
Rogers is also claiming to get the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 update out by the end of March so we will see how close they hit that mark as well. Rogers has been doing a fairly good job of trying to push out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to its devices, but they have to first get the update from Samsung – which is not always the easiest thing to do. Samsung has been highly criticized for not jumping on their updates and being the number one Android mobile phone producer, they really should be setting the standard.
It will be interesting to see how the KitKat upgrade affects the operation of your mobile phone. Some of the features were Nexus only, such as the Google Experience Launcher, and let’s remember that Samsung’s TouchWiz may mask some of the pure Android experience. Although there are many APKs out there that can fix that if you have your heart set on the Google Launcher. The transparent notifications bar is a small, but nice touch. One of the nicest features we hope to see is the new Google Smart Dialer – it adds a lot of functionality into the calling experience. Tap & Pay services of Google’s Wallet will now be made available to the masses. With Android 4.4 you do not need the NFC chip built into your device in order for this feature to work.
Please let us know on our Google+ Page if you have received you KitKat upgrade today and what changes have you noticed in you device.
