Sprint was the first US carrier to roll out Android 4.4.2 to their Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 on February 13th and 20th, respectively. Today, Sprint announced plans for more KitKat updates for more Samsung devices on their network. Those devices include the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Mega, and Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. Per usual, there’s no ETA as to when these updates will be available, but I’d venture to guess that it won’t be til after the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 updates are done rolling out.
Even if you aren’t on Sprint, this is good news. As this means these devices on other carriers and in other regions should also be getting the update. However, users won’t be seeing the new version of Touchwiz, officially, or any other real visual changes. But there will be plenty of under-the-hood changes, which all of us have seen with Android 4.4 – KitKat.
Sprint highlighted a few features in their blog post today, which included SMS in hangouts, and updated lock screen capabilities, including full screen album art. We should also see a slight visual change with the status bar icons. As we’ve seen with the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, the status bar icons are now white like on every other device running KitKat. Which is nice to see Samsung finally get away from the Gingerbread green.
It will probably still be a while before we see any of these updates go out, as we are just now starting to see the updates for other variants of the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 rollout. But hopefully it won’t take too long as I know plenty of people are still in their contracts on older Samsung devices.
How many of you are on Sprint with a Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Mega, or Galaxy Tab 3 7.0? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.
