Google Glass is one of those wonderful innovations that will really change the way consumers interact with their data and the world around them. From being able to search for things on the fly all without ever having to touch your phone, to snapping a photo and even recording video with a first person view that truly provides an experience unlike any other. Yesterday we learned about a great little app that came to Glass called Livestream, which is a popular platform for recording video and sharing it with the world. While this is a great new way for Glass Explorers to share live events and awesome happenings with others first hand, it isn’t the only option. We have also seen a number of businesses offer unique experiences using Glass, or to users wearing Glass. In fact, a new app has just surfaced today that promises to focus on the use of Glass to share something special with the sports enthusiast. More specifically, to stream and share the all the best action at NHL Hockey games.
The app is called Skybox, and it promises to bring real-time(or as close as possible to real-time) hockey plays and fights to the fans of the sport. The Skybox app is one meant solely for Glass Explorers who will be on site at the Verizon Center Arena of the Washington Capitals NHL hockey team. The cool thing about this app is that the production team from the Arena behind the recording of the games partnered with a group from APX Labs, to catch and cut specialized bits of video and feed them straight to the Skybox app which can then be broadcast to fans wearing Glass at the game. While this app really serves no purpose outside of the Arena and won’t matter much to people who aren’t fans of hockey, it does a great job at illustrating the uses and applications that such a piece of technology like Glass can have from the business side of things. While the app is meant for fans as entertainment should they leave their seat and want to keep from missing any of the best moments, the app itself is in no way consumer based and does a great job at showing just how useful Glass or apps for Glass can be for business.
Not only does the app provide with you specialized instant replay video feeds meant only for the app(this means people watching the game highlights on TV won’t see what goes through to the app feed), Skybox also provides player stats and scores, which is something we’ve seen is a possibility before. This also wouldn’t be the first major sports team experimenting with Google Glass, as the Sacramento Kings had a partnership setup to have Glass worn during a game. In fact, the Skybox app is just one of many efforts we have seen to help drive business forward with the use of Glass related services, that are part of the bigger picture to enhance the services offered to clients and consumers. Business is business as usual, and Google isn’t the only company that seems to think Glass Explorers and future Glass owners should be included.
