Last year, Samsung release a number of different variants of the Galaxy S4, including the Galaxy S4 Active and Galaxy S4 Zoom. As such, when the Galaxy S5 was announced back in February during Mobile World Congress, the speculation of a Galaxy S5 Zoom started up almost instantly. Recently, Samsung sent out invites for an event, asking us to “Kapture the Event“, which sparked rumors of a Galaxy S5 Zoom, with the name of Galaxy K. Now, leaked images out of China have surfaced of what could be the Galaxy K, complete with the same dotted pattern found on the Galaxy S5.
So far, the word on the street is that the Galaxy K is going to feature a 10x Optical Zoom, a Hexa-Core Exynos CPU like that found in the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, 2GB of RAM, a 4.8-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and presumably the same software features of the Galaxy S5. According to rumor, the camera side of things is powered by a Xenon flash (like the Galaxy S4 Zoom) and a 20-megapixel sensor, which is a marked improvement from the 16-megapixel sensor found in last year’s device.
Despite the fact that the device in these images is clearly wearing a protective shell of sorts, it doesn’t look quite as bulky as the Galaxy S4 Zoom, which was in fact one of the bulkiest devices I had ever used when I reviewed it. Needless to say, last year’s Galaxy S4 Zoom was not the most portable of smartphones out there, and made me genuinely question how someone could use one day-to-day. Still, it looks like the Galaxy K is going to be an altogether thinner, more manageable devices, which will please those with pockets all over the world.
The specs here aren’t much to write home about, and they’re not going to be in a device that focuses on more than being a camera than it does anything else. Last year, we found the Galaxy S4 Zoom to be a confused device that was more camera than smartphone, while also being more smartphone than camera. We don’t have too much longer to wait, as the event is scheduled for April 29th.
